This Would Be Funny

The following story would be a funny way of dealing with a long commute if it didn't point out what the woman of Saudi Arabia have to go through.

Four Saudi women teaching in a remote village school have married their driver so they can live closer to work, Al-Watan newspaper said on Monday.

The newspaper said the women from Al-Baha province in south-west Saudi Arabia were impressed with the man's "good morals" and decided to marry him and live together in the village where they teach -- avoiding a tiring daily commute.

They were married in a short ceremony, and have agreed to pay the driver a share of their monthly salaries, Al-Watan said. Women are not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia, while men can marry up to four women according to Islamic law. Yahoo News

There are so many injustices in this story. Women cannot drive. Men can marry up to four wives. Women must be accompanied by a male at all times. A man can divorce a wife anytime he wants to but a woman cannot divorce her husband with the same ease. A woman must wear a veil because Islam considers every part of her to be sexual in nature. Ah, Islam, the protector of womens rights!

On the serious side, Islam is so humorless if I didn't laugh once in awhile I would have cashed it in not long ago. It's a shame women aren't valued in their society the way they should be. On the other hand our own culture finds worth in a woman if she is attractive, thin etc. I like the way the special place that Jesus gave women.

"Four Saudi women teaching in a remote village school have married their driver so they can live closer to work,"
And they lived happily ever after.
Very sad.

It's practical though, you don't live in sin and you got a "cheap" ride to work.

elmers,

The difference being in our society, women can make their own choices.

felis,

Happily ever after, fairy tales abound in Islam.

elmers,

But you have to share!:)

You're right there is a huge difference, it's that I think that if women were valued more they would make different choices...abortion e.g.

elmers,

I would need to write a post to answer that fully. As with any person, a persons value should not be limited to what they look like on the outside but what's on the inside. Sadly, some men and women can only measure their value by their looks.

elmers,

It's okay. It's just I started to write a response about the points you brought up and I realized what I was doing. Have a habit of doing that.

And thanks. Yours is one of my daily reads and love it. :)

anonymous,

I suppose you would have ask President Clinton about his non-action during 1995-1999.

I am a concerned citizen and to be honest I did not think much about the issues you speak of until my country was brutally attacked and close to 3,000 citizens were killed.

As far as slanted news stories, this one was filed under Odd News.

Do you think remaining silent about the problems women, homosexuals, and non-Muslims in Islamic countries will help improve the situation?

For years Americans have been accused of not being interested in anything beyond their borders. Yet when we have been given the great gift of the internet and speak out against these injustices, you say don't. We have no more moral right than Islamists. I say bullshit.

If you have read any of my other posts, the is a consistent theme, from denouncing racism in my own country to upholding womens rights.

If you and I don't speak out for the the women of Islamic countries who will? Who will speak out for women on the rise of honor killings in Europe among Muslim populations? Who will speak out against homosexuals being hung in Iran? Who will speak out against Christians being prosecuted in Islamic countries? Who will speak out on the degenerate almost daily terror attacks that the citizens of Israel face? Whose voice will speak out against terror in Jordan, Spain, England, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladash, the US, and other places across the world? Who will dare point the finger at the common thread in all of this, Islamists?

Next time have a little more courage and don't go anonymous.
