Things That Grip You

I spend a lot of time photographing the devastation left in Biloxi and Gulfport by Hurricane Katrina. There are certain things that grip me. The following are two photos that were taken behind Sharkheads Souvenir Store on Hwy 90 in Biloxi. They invoke in me all that was lost.

The view through the gutted first floor of Sharkheads. It shows the devastation of Sharkheads and also the destruction to some of the motels across Hwy 90. Sharkheads is a 3 story building. The first two floors were gutted by Katrina. The thing is, there are more and more people coming back to the beach and it does not seem so lifeless anymore.

A forlorn child's ride behind Sharkheads.

It is pretty depressing.

And just look at those loose concrete slabs (2nd pic)!!
Nothingwas strong enough for the water.

I had some time so I read some of your past posts about Katrina. I don't know what to say, maybe I have but I'm too young to say it. I felt small.

felis,

It was bad. But there is more and more rebuilding go on along the beach and it doesn't feel so empty anymore.

emanuel,

Your words are more than welcome. Why did you feel small?

Because we can't stop a Natural Disaster. Because we have so much power but a weightless wind can smash down that power in seconds. Because even I was brought up to be some kind of a warrior I would die easily in a no escape disaster. My wife's bestfriend died in the Tsunami, He was Israeli, He had military training but it didn't manage to prevent his death. That's what I wanted to say, it's a stupid death. No one should die like that... like a small being

emanuel,

I am so sorry to hear about your wife's bestfriend. It's hard to lose someone. I am fortunate that no one I knew was lost in Hurricane Katrina. Nature does have the awesome power to make all of us feel small.

Katrina was the first hurricane I ever felt terror. I was 20 miles inland but the sounds the wind made still haunt me at times.

Some of the people I know were in their homes when the surge trapped them. Thankfully, they all survived. But their faces when they told their stories haunt me.

The destruction haunts me.

We'll overcome.

I remember Sharkheads. Wow.

Like emanuel, I feel small when looking at pictures like this. Small and helpless in so many ways.

But you're right - you will overcome. My Grama's friends have repaired their damange and are now helping their friends repair and rebuild. Overcoming day by day.

hfs,

I'm glad that your Grama's house has been repaired. Day by day the rebuilding is overtaking the clean-up. There are more rays. Day by day it's getting better.
